Head of Music at Big Picture Entertainment Holly Williamson Talks Life in a Trailer House Music Department

In just the past year, Holly Williamson, Head of Music at Big Picture Entertainment, has led the music team behind ad campaign soundtracks for blockbuster films, streaming specials, network television series, and much more. In our interview, Holly shares her favorite parts of working in a trailer house and her advice for anyone seeking a career in a music department at an agency.

Can you share your background in music departments at agencies?

I started off in music clearance and licensing at MGM then produced and supervised music for TV commercials for a few years. After that, I moved over to trailers in 2001 and have never looked back. I’ve worked at 3 trailer houses in Los Angeles over the years and find it to be the most challenging but most creative place to be as a music supervisor. 

How’s life at Big Picture? What’s your favorite part of the job?

Life at Big Pic is great and busy! It’s such a talented group of creatives and well… just good, down to earth, respectable, and kind people. It’s an absolute pleasure working here. I feel very blessed. My favorite part of the job is working with my team to find the best music possible for the project. 

Has work changed much for you since COVID?

Working from home hasn’t really been a challenge for me as I’ve worked from home in the past but it was tough being a solo parent with both of my kids homeschooling. Thankfully, they’re back in school this year and it’s been much smoother. I much prefer working from home because I feel like I’m more productive, comfortable, can save money and I don’t have to sit in traffic! 

Are there certain types of projects that you especially enjoy working on these days?

I like that our work is so diverse. One minute I’m working on a huge studio release and next, promos for reality TV.  My favorite genres of film are sci fi, post-apocalyptic stuff and romantic comedies so I’ll perk up a bit whenever that stuff comes into the shop. 

What’s the best way for a music company to approach a music supervisor? 

Nothing revolutionary, just an email introducing themselves and explaining what kind of music is their forte and they have to pitch, and I love receiving themed playlists!

Is there any kind of music or sound you’re looking for that’s currently in short supply?

I mean cover songs will never die, so trailerized cover songs are always welcome. 

Any advice for someone trying to get into a music department at an agency? 

Yeah, get on LinkedIn and try to find alumni who are in the business and send them your resume.  Try to make as many connections as possible. When the world really opens back up, go to shows, use your social media to meet folks in the industry. Intern anywhere that could get you the experience you need to move forward.

Any all-time favorite placements?

I love all of them but maybe it’s Smashing Pumpkins in the Watchmen trailer only because it took me months to find that song after trying hundreds of other pieces of music. It’s pretty rewarding when something like that locks and goes to finish!
